Hospital to host safety expo

College Station Medical Center wants to help make your summer safer.

Medical officials will host a Summer Safety and Wellness Expo from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Veterans Affairs clinic across from the hospital.

Experts from various departments in the hospital will be available to answer questions and offer tips.

Ashley Johse, trauma coordinator for The Med's emergency room, said this is the first year the hospital has coordinated a safety expo, and officials are eager to see the community turn out.

"The point of this is to get injury prevention information out into the community before we really get into the summer," she said. "We see our fair share of drownings and see a rise in patients involved in ATV accidents."

She said the emergency room sees an increase in patients with burns from fireworks. Dehydration also is common in the summer.

The summer safety expo will focus on all of those topics and more, Johse said.

Information on preventing more serious health risks, such as cardiac failures and strokes, will be available as well, Johse said.

There will be Frito pies and snow cones for children, and a face painter will be on hand.

Proudly serving the residents of College Station, Bryan, Brenham, Navasota, Buffalo, Centerville, Caldwell,
Madisonville, Hearne, Franklin, Somerville and Huntsville.
